Cameron Highlands
Cameron Highlands is one of those destinations you'd want to consider if you're looking for a relaxing retreat, away from the city's heat, where life seems to go 0.5x city pace, sipping tea overlooking the serene tea plantations, or picking away fresh strawberries and eating it with whipped cream. Cameron Highlands is one of the few hill resorts in Malaysia, that has temperatures as low as 15C. Reaching up above 1500 meters ASL (above sea level), located on the Titiwangsa Range, the back bone of Peninsular Malaysia, Cameron is mainly an agricultural village, growing a variety of vegetables, flowers, fruits that are not normally found in other hot weathered states. The Highlands was named after William Cameron, a British surveyor who discovered this place in 1885. British tea growers flocked the land after realizing its potential to grow tea - which was a precious commodity then, making Cameron Highlands, Malaysia's largest tea producing region.

Getting to Camerons
The only way you can get to Cameron Highlands is by road. There are three routes up, from the South via Tapah, North via Simpang Pulai or from Kelantan via Gua Musang.

Driving
From the South via Tapah: It is roughly 300km from Kuala Lumpur and take about 3hours to dive up via the North -South Expressway (NSE). Drive and head towards Ipoh. There are plenty of signs that will tell you where Tapah is. From Tapah to Ringlet – the first town in Cameron Highlands will take you about 1.5 hours. Petrol stations are in Ringlet and Brinchang. Toll rate from Kuala Lumpur to Tapah is about RM 20.

From North Via Simpang Pulai
This is a new highway, with better road conditions. It takes roughly 1 hour to get to Brinchang from Simpang Pulai. There are less winding roads here.
The road has plenty of bends and it is mostly single lane heading up and heading down. There will be traffic if there are heavy vehicles going up the hill, as they usually have to crawl up. Take care when overtaking.
-If it is rainy season, take care as landslides occur very often due to the increase in development up in Cameron Highlands.

Getting Around Cameron Highlands
Due to the hilly nature of Cameron Highlands and also the distance between the towns, it would be best to have your own mode of transportation.

First option: Rent a scooter!
There aren’t many car and motorbike rentals here. There might be some hotels or guesthouses that are renting scooters out, which are really great. Make sure you have a full tank when you are riding, as the only petrol stations are in Ringlet and Brinchang. Bicycles aren’t practical so don’t bother asking. Unless you missed your gym session and want to do 30 hours of ‘iron man training’ then you are welcome to try. – Very Hilly roads!

Second option: go on a tour. Because most of the ‘attractions’ or things to do here is mostly covered by tour operators. A simple tour that covers some jungle trekking, a visit to the tea plantation and flower nurseries are sufficient. You can get to the night market yourself by taxi. If you are staying in Brinchang, you can walk to the market. (Walking at night is not very safe as there aren’t any street lights). If you are to visit the fresh morning vegetable and flower markets, you can do so by walking. It is really pleasant to walk in the mornings and evenings, but not at night.

Taking a taxi – If you do not want to go on a tour, the taxi is also an alternative way to get around. They run on a flat rate, so please bargain first before boarding. There are plenty of taxis at the taxi stand in Tanah Rata. These taxis’s also offer interstate service.
Taxi from the Tanah Rata Taxi Stand to Brinchang (RM5-6), Kea Farm/Butterfly Farm/Raju’s Strawberry Hill and Equatorial Hotel (RM 15-18), Sungai Palas Plantation (RM 20- 30), Boh Tea Plantation (RM 28-30), Kampung Terla (RM 18-20)
Interstate Taxi fares:
To Tapah RM 70, Ipoh (RM 90), Penang (RM 250), Kuala Lumpur (RM 220), Gua Musang (RM 160- 180)
For enquiries, please contact: Tanah Rata Taxi Stand - 05-4911234 or 05-4912355
